Student Writing

Gilbert’s story will be in our last edition for the term as he has been on a holiday…

However, I have seen some extraordinary writing produced by Preps (based on Little Red Riding Hood), and Grade 2s this week.  Here are some samples from Prep Ellie.  The learning focus for the lesson was working on different ways to start sentences:

Suddenly, a shadow emerged for the forest – Gabe Prep

Her grandmother heard a loud knock on the door – Frankie Prep

Red’s grandmother was sick and she had to stay inside – Rose

The children wrote these independently, after they shared their ideas and Ellie modelled.  I am so proud of these children and their capacity to apply their new learning.

Health and wellbeing

The viruses out there continue to have an impact on staff and student health, but the good news is that the COVID cases here have dropped considerably.  Thank you parents and carers for keeping children at home until they are well again for school.  It is becoming a little easier to source relief staff to replace unwell staff.  We are very fortunate to have some regular replacement teachers, like Kylie and Olivia, who are very much a part of the staff team.

Shirley’s last day

The last day of term is also Shirley’s last day at YWPS.  She is finally graduating after 27 years!  Join us at assembly on Friday 16th September from 9.15am to farewell Shirley.

And farewell to Sujith

Sujith Krishnan joined YW at the start of the year, working as an aide with students and teachers in classrooms.  Sujith has learned a lot in his time with us and is now poised to start applying his skills at a school much closer to his home.  Thank you Sujith and good luck.

Buildings and Grounds Update

The brick wall on Powell Street has been demolished and now we are ready for a tidy up to prepare for our new quiet play space.

Empty the shed of stored e-waste  Dig out the Stump

Clear out the area and pull up the pavers

In preparation, we are holding a Working Bee at school, to clear up the courtyard and adjacent areas.  The courtyard plan includes re-using the existing terracotta pavers that are laid in the space.  Pulling these up and storing them is one of the main working bee tasks.

If you can help on the day please register here Working Bee Registration.  The space is going to look amazing!

The design for the new play space is on the display board near the school office.

Warm regards,

Karen

#13 Grade 2 Author Visit

Grade Two Author Visit

On Wednesday, 24 August, the Grade Twos were fortunate to have local children’s author, Anna Battese, visit for the day to conduct writing workshops. Anna is the author of the series, PD McPem’s Agency for Mysterious Mysteries (available at the Younger Sun Bookshop). Anna shared her journey as a writer and led the students through a session on how to plan their own PD McPem mysteries. The students were bursting with ideas and excited to share their story maps. For their story plans, students had to imagine the mysterious item that could be hidden in the show-and-tell lunchbox.

In Jack’s story it was a dancing skeleton.

In Fletcher’s story it was a great white shark.

In Essie’s story there was a parrot and kittens in the lunchbox.

Evie imagined there was a giant marshmallow in there.

We thank Anna for her time, enthusiasm and generosity. Our students benefit enormously from these interactions with members of our local community and it really did bring a spark of magic to Book Week.

#13 Girls Hockey

Congratulations to Hannah Mannix (5/6Neil) for her wonderful achievement - she was a Team Vic 12 Years & Under Girls Hockey team member representing SSV at the School Sport 12 & Under Hockey Championships in Canberra. Awesome effort & we are very proud of you!

Pictured here is Hannah (right) with Freya (left), a past YWPS student, in their Team Vic gear.

#13 Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series

Yarraville West Primary School students have been involved in the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series, which provides extension activities for high-ability students in Victorian government schools. Within the series, education expert partners are delivering an array of online programs across all areas.

In the area of Maths, many of our Year 3-6 students have explored number through unlocking magic card tricks, used understandings of fractions to draw mutant flowers and add/subtract in number bases other than 10. Students drew dizzying pictures with squares and used these pictures to investigate infinite series and how they represent infinity.

In the area of Literacy and the Arts, students have taken a virtual tour of the National Gallery of Victoria. They are currently looking forward to hearing from an author who focuses on creating characters and stories that promote body positivity, diversity and inclusivity.

In celebration of National Science Week, students joined the Metro Tunnel Education Team to learn about some ground-breaking women– Joan Kirner, Meg Lanning, Alice Appleford and Millie Peacock - and how they have been commemorated for their work on the project.

The feedback from students involved has been very positive. According to one participant, ‘I felt uncomfortable to be challenged but I loved it, all at the same time-it was mind blowing!’

Students participated in a 'Young Philosophers’ workshop. It was a fun and challenging experience using works in the National Gallery of Victoria collection to inspire creative and critical thinking.

#13 Italian Festa Day

It was wonderful to see students participate in a range of Italian activities and experiences during our special Italian Festa Day last Thursday.

The Italian Festa Day immerses students in the Italian culture and language in a fun and engaging way. Some of the activities students may have participated in included Italian cooking, Venetian mask making, Italian pizza people making, Italian literature activities and many more.

It was also great to see the Italian language being used in classrooms throughout the week. On the Italian Festa day YWPS was filled with a sea of green(verde), white(bianco) and red(rosso) along with some Italian characters including Luigi, Mario, Strega Nona and others. The Italian performance was enjoyed by all and the feedback regarding the gelato is a resounding ‘Delizioso’.

Hopefully, the Italian Festa Day inspired families and friends to explore and experience Italian culture and language at home or in the community. There are so many wonderful local Italian restaurants and shops in Yarraville including Pizza D’Asporto, Antipasto, L’Uccellino and Motorino.

They are well worth a visit and they provide a great opportunity for students to use and practice some Italian language in real settings. I have heard that many students have Italian nights with Italian food and language. We look forward to continuing our Italian language journey this year as learning other languages can ‘…give learners the world by opening their minds to other cultures and opening doors to new possibilities’.

Ciao, Anna

#13 Australian Centre for Contemporary Art

It was a great pleasure to take the art class out of the art room and into the art gallery last week! The year 3/4s had an excursion at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA). They participated in the TALK THINK MAKE program that is linked to ACCA’s current exhibition Like a Wheel That Turns: The 2022 Macfarlane Commissions. The little artists were able to reflect upon, discuss and respond to painting practices which extend beyond the frame.

Thank you for your gold coin donation- your contribution helps ACCA support exhibitions and keep educational programs free.  Click on the link below to see some photos of the day.
