#17 Principal's Message

Greetings from Campaspe Downs Camp!  It’s a cloudy, rainy sunny day here and we are packing in activities, eating lots of camp food, and generally having a ball.

Not a lot of sleep for some of the teachers and some students last night, it being SO exciting camping in a bunkroom together with your friends.  Torches are fun, aren’t they?

We all made it to sleep in the end and I was SO happy that a certain student didn’t choose our cabin door to knock on at 5.30am to ask if we had textas so he could colour in his camp book cover.

Breakfast at 7am saw half of us dressed and half in pyjamas to load up on cereal, scrambled eggs, beans and toast.  Then off to our first activities for the day.  I was with Neil, Ellie and Simone and 42 students creating bush survival shelters.  The score was simple: high chance to survive, possible chance to survive, or fat chance to survive. Everyone worked in teams to drag and hoist fallen logs and branches, sling and tie ropes, stretch out tarps, mix mud glue for shelter foundations, and set out traps to capture intruder animals.

A quiet intruder moment was had when someone turned around and a gentle but very large furry brown spider was spied on his back.  The team and shelter momentarily collapsed, as the quiet moment became a terrifying moment. However, the spider was skilfully manoeuvred off the T-shirt and carefully transferred out of the survival zone.  Our first survival challenge achieved!

The children are having just a great time, being together, hanging out in their cabins, having free play in the big gym or running around outside, between organised activities. As I write this, I can hear someone’s voice singing a song happily in their cabin nearby.  Who needs digital devices to have such active, group fun?

Camps are a big undertaking for staff and parents, and I appreciate the trust and confidence parents and carers place in us when we head out for a few days with your child/ren.

Simone coordinates the arrangements from booking the buses, to directing and guiding us every day in our camp roles.  I know that you join me in thanking her, and the rest of the teachers and Education Support staff for their care and support for kids on camp.

Well, time to get ready for our third activity of the day, and then prepare for the D I S C O!

Kind regards,

Karen

#17 Prep Zoo Trip

Last Friday (4th November) YWPS Preps headed off to visit the Werribee Zoo. Our trip started with a bus ride from school where some very excited students played spotto and mimicked the wild animals they were about to see. Students got the chance to get up close and personal with Australian animals, enjoy a safari ride and even witnessed the zookeepers feeding a pack of African Dogs, which we all agreed looked similar to break time at school. Overall the day was jam packed with learning and adventure!

#17 Remembrance Day

This week in the art room the 5/6 students have been learning about the significance of Remembrance Day and how the poem In Flanders Fields by John McCrae inspired the Red Poppy Appeal internationally.  They used charcoal to create their own poppy drawings.

#17 Free Piano Hire - Prep School Families

PREPS Pianos Recycled have a number of pianos that they would like to offer for a FREE hire.  As for all PREPS Recycled Pianos, they have been checked for structural integrity and tuned to concert pitch.  Interested families would only need to pay for the delivery component (approximately $300 one way), with the option to purchase at the end of the hire period if desired.  We will be allocating pianos on a first come first served basis with delivery from the second week of November onwards.

The PREPS Family Extension not only provides a new home for an old piano, it is an easy to access, affordable and sustainable way for young people to experience music and have a break from the digital world.
