Challenge and Excellence

Challenge and Excellence

At Yarraville West Primary, we pride ourselves on providing a great learning environment for all students. We work together to achieve excellence and have high expectations to promote students’ intellectual, creative, physical and social growth. Our teaching programs provide opportunities for students to extend their learning by developing breadth of knowledge and skills, as well as depth. We adapt curriculum within the classroom at the point of need to ensure that each child has an opportunity to reach their potential, regardless of the starting point.

For some of our students, this means broadening the curriculum beyond regular classroom programming. Our highly-abled students are identified using allied health reports and conversations with parents, in conjunction with professional discussions and analysis of student achievement. These students are extended in the classroom through differentiated practice (teaching in a responsive way that caters to all student levels). In addition, highly abled students are further extended through two other external programs, which are outlined below.

Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP)

The Victorian High Ability Program, a government initiative, is a 10-week online program for our Year 5 and 6 students. The program runs each term and focuses on tasks that stimulate students' critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity skills – enriching their understanding of English and Mathematics.

The Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES)

Students who have been identified as highly-abled have the opportunity to participate in the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series. This program provides extension and enriching activities. Within the series, education expert partners deliver a suite of virtual incursions across all curriculum areas, such as Literacy, Numeracy, Arts and Social/Emotional Literacy. Exciting formats include, but are not limited to, workshops, tutorials, conferences, lectures and competitions.
