Physical Education
At Yarraville West Primary School, each year level has one hour of Physical Edcuation per week. The progression of skill development follows our particular format:
YWPS Preps begin the year with familiarisation of the environment, an understanding of safety rules and getting to know the teachers. Once this is established, the format would be similar to the Grade 1 and and 2 description below.
Preps also take part in a Perceptual Motor Program (PMP); this is a movement-based program which helps younger students improve their eye/hand and eye/foot coordination, their balance, locomotion and eye-tracking skills.
Grades 1 and 2:
During grades 1 and 2 classes, students are separated into 3 groups per grade: one group is teacher led and each group takes 8-10 minutes on an activity, all centred around a particular skill (for example striking - cricket with soft balls, Hot Shot tennis against the wall, teeball etc).
Grades 3 and 4:
This is a skills development time with a related minor game, for example Rounders.
Grades 5 and 6:
Students refine their skills through Game Play, focussing on a variety of sports, across the two years, for example lacrosse, cricket, or football. The games can be modified to suit space availability.
5/6 Interschool Sport
YWPS are a member of the Westgate District, comprising eight local schools. The 5/6 grades are timetabled to practise their chosen Winter and Summer sport, for two hours each week. This culminates in a Gala Day, where they play against the other schools in our District. Every child is part of a team.
State Schools Victoria (SSV) District Events
Students in grades 3-6 (9 years and older) are eligible to compete in swimming, cross country and track and field.
For those who may be interested, Trials are run for swimming and cross country teams. Track and field teams are chosen from results at our Whole School Track and Field Day.
Water Safety
Water Safety for grades 3-6 is at the beginning of the year and for grades Prep-2 in Term-4. The program is run by the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre Schools Program.
