At Yarraville West Primary School we are dedicated to providing a comprehensive Social Emotional Learning curriculum. Our goal is to equip students with essential life skills that foster resilience, empathy, and effective communication. By integrating activities that promote self-awareness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills, we strive to create a supportive environment where every child feels valued and empowered.
Through collaborative projects, student voice and choice we encourage students to develop a strong sense of identity and belonging. Our teachers are committed to modelling positive behaviour and cultivating a culture of kindness and respect throughout the school community. By prioritising social emotional learning, we aim to prepare our students not only for academic success but also for lifelong personal and social well-being. All of Yarraville West’s Social Emotional Learning supports learning and wellbeing as outlined in the Department of Education Framework for Improving Student Outcomes (FISO 2.0).
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)
Yarraville West’s SWPBS approach includes a behaviour matrix created with input from staff, students, and families, reflecting the school's vision and values of Respect, Resilience, Integrity, and Creativity. This matrix outlines the expected behaviours in all areas of the school, which are taught, modelled, and reinforced in classrooms. Teaching positive social behaviour is crucial for students' overall education, similar to academic skills. The matrix provides staff with consistent language to promote desired behaviours and address issues when they arise. Throughout each term, teachers focus on specific matrix areas tailored to their cohort's needs, explicitly teaching and providing practice of expected behaviours.
The Resilience Project
At our school, we’re proud to partner with The Resilience Project, a comprehensive mental health and wellbeing program that empowers students, staff, and families to build resilience and foster positive emotions. This evidence-based program provides our entire school community with valuable tools and strategies focused on enhancing mental health, resilience, and emotional wellbeing through practices of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness (GEM), and emotional literacy.
Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships (RRRR)
Respectful Relationships is an evidence based curriculum that we teach to develop a culture of respect and equality across our entire school community. From our classrooms to staffrooms, sports days and social events, we model and re-teach appropriate beheaviours. This approach leads to positive impacts on students’ academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students. The Respectful Relationships program leads the way in saying yes to respect and equality, and creating genuine and lasting change so that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
Bully Stoppers
In 2025, the Junior School Council Leaders along with our School Council President and Principal signed the Bully Stoppers Pledge. At Yarraville West, we are committed to a whole-school approach that empowers students and prevents bullying behaviours. We provide students with opportunties such as surveys and forums, to ensure they have both a voice and meaningful involvement in school based activities that address and respond to bullying. Bully Stoppers have resources designed to support teachers to prevent, address and respond to bullying. These resources offer valuable strategies and tools that help create a safer and more inclusive environment for everyone.
